Sailing Yacht Magler - Moody 29 fin

Right - by popular demand (well Mick actually), I've decided to put a few pictures of our yacht Magler online.

A quick summary as to history. I bought the boat with my Dad back in February from Reimar at Dover Marine Brokerage. She's a 1981 Moody 29 Fin keel with a 20hp freshwater cooled Betamarine diesel. The survey found osmosis in the hull causing us to renegotiate the price but at the end of the day a deal was done. She was in fairly good nick and we were attracted to the recently fitted Kubota based 3 cylinder BetaMarine diesel. It seems that marine diesels cost an absolute fortune (upwards of £5k fitted) so this was obviously an advantage due to nearly all the previous boats we had viewed had original 20 year old units and we felt that we could end up with a large bill relatively soon after purchase. Interior wise it was OK just needing a bit of varnish here and there and a new ply flooring. However, it seems that we got a bit carried away and after 6 months of still waiting for the osmosis repair to be completed we've had plenty of time to spend some serious money.Below is a non-definitive list of some of the things we've done:

Replaced cabin sole with teak/holly
Replaced all water tanks, filter and pipework
Replaced hatch and window acrylic
Repaired and veneered chart table top
Fitted 240v Shorepower including RCD's, MCD's and galvanic isolator
Fitted 20amp Sterling charger/power pack
Fitted new large bowl sea toilet and replaced all pipework
Replaced all seacocks and one skin fitting
Recovered all upholstery and cushions and replaced curtains
Fitted automatic electric bilge pump
Fitted Gas Alarm
Fitted new halogen cabin lighting
Purchased Sleeved Storm Jib
New sacrificial leech fitted to rolling genoa
Fitted Echomax radar reflector
Fitted Pioneer head and 12CD autochanger from sis's old Beemer
Full engine service
New dodgers
Bought and fitted Simrad waterproof portable VHF
Numerous safety aids have been purchased such as MOB kit, floating lines, RORC flare kit and fire extinguishers
Replaced fuel and water tank fillers
Painted bilges and general tidy up

Now we haven't finished yet (still have outboard and liferaft to get) and this is all on a boat that was pretty good to start with! I'm not happy with the 12v wiring (and neither was the surveyor) so I'm looking at a complete rewire with decent tinned copper cabling in the winter. She is also desperate for a decent hull polish but there's no point while it's still in the yard getting grubby so that will have to wait a bit longer. We've also arranged to have the yard strip the dark blue sheer line back to the gelcoat and repaint cos it's looking a bit tatty.

Over the months that have passed, I've taken a few pictures so I've got a few pages together and have split them as follows:

Second viewing
The day of the survey

Some stuff we've done
.(I'll get some better ones once we're afloat!)

So - all this time and money and still not floating around - heck this sailing's a laugh!

I must point out how useful the YBW.COM forums are for help and advice when undertaking saily types of things - from fitting a radar reflector to advice on shorepower socket locations, there are plenty of people willing to part with information that will allow you to do the job yourself rather that have to get the "pro's" in at 10 times the cost. You can join the forums at www.ybw.com/forums

Enjoy the pictures
